Flower essences are diluted extracts of various types of flowers and plants that are used to treat animals and people. They are similar to homeopathic remedies in that they are diluted and potentized to make them more effective than just using the original flower as an herbal extract.

The person who first developed the original flower remedies was Dr. Edward Bach, an English physician. He developed the Bach Flower Remedies from 1930 onwards, when he was working as a homeopathic practitioner and devoted the last years of his life to researching and developing his remedies.

He wanted to find a simpler form of treatment that would not require anything to be destroyed or altered. It was the work of this sensitive and dedicated physician, which first started to characterize the healing properties of these preparations.

Dr. Bach believed that diseases of the body come about as a result of imbalances or negativity at the level of the soul and by correcting the problem at this level, healing would result and the body would heal on all levels. He became discouraged at how little it seemed medicine was able to heal. His work convinced him that if people could be at peace emotionally, they would be and stay healthy.

Bach characterized the healing energies of thirty-eight plants. He also began the Bach Healing Center in Mount Vernon England. Since Bach's death, the study of flower essences has exploded. People from all over the world have made a point of studying the healing energies of their native flora.

The flower remedies act to balance disharmonies in the emotional and spiritual body and bring about a gentle healing by bringing the body back in balance with itself. The term "flower essences" may conjure up thoughts of sweet fragrances, but flower essences actually have no scent at all and should not be confused with "aromatherapy" or "essential oils."  Flower essences contain the life-force energy released from flowers in the peak of their bloom.

Flower essences are water-based solutions, which contain the essential energies of flowers. The flowers are gathered from nature when they are just at the point of perfection and it is important that the flowers are free from any toxins and preservatives. They are made by floating flowers in water and allowing the light of the sun, moon or stars to help the water absorb the energy signature of the flowers.

The structure of the water molecule is such that it can store these energies. Then the extracted essence is preserved with alcohol to make a mother tincture. The resulting remedy is then diluted in spring water to make a solution that can be taken by an animal or a person. They act like a catalyst to cause healing. Originally at that time Dr. Bach felt thirty-eight Bach Flower Remedies would correct all imbalances that were possible.

Dr. Bach found that animals responded just as well to Bach Flower remedies as people and seemed to have similar emotional imbalances that could be corrected with the appropriate remedy.
